Auntie Anne’s Unveils Recipe Challenge Winner for National Pretzel Day

Strawberry Cheesecake Dessert Pizza Claims Grand Prize in First-Ever Challenge

 

LANCASTER, Pa. (April 26, 2012) – Pretzel lovers from across the country submitted sweet and savory recipes for Auntie Anne’s first-ever At-Home Baking Kit Recipe Challenge, but just one pretzel-based recipe took home the $1,000 grand prize. Putting her unique twist on a common dessert, Chaelyn [Shay-lin] Consaul of New York, won the judges’ top vote with her Strawberry Cheesecake Dessert Pizza.

 

The winning recipe features a slightly sweet pizza crust, made with Auntie Anne’s Baking Kit pretzel dough and is topped with cheesecake filling, layered with strawberry glaze and sliced, fresh strawberries and then drizzled with chocolate.

 

Judging Process

Last week, the six judges tasted and graded the top recipes to determine the grand prize and first place winners. The judges represented a cross-section of pretzel expertise and featured a combined 57 years’ experience with Auntie Anne’s.

 

Scot Crain, Auntie Anne’s Chief Customer Officer and one of six judges, called Consaul’s recipe, “A summery, light dessert treat.”  

 

Claiming the first place title, and winning $500, was Texas-based Amy LaGrone’s savory BBQ Chicken Wraps. Described by one judge as BBQ chicken and fresh vegetables wrapped in light pretzel pita bread, most judges envisioned this recipe as a summertime lunch or dinner option.

 

Phil Lapp, Director of Corporate Sales said, “My family would enjoy this as a meal with a side of baked beans. Hot sauce may be a nice addition to the wrap, too.”

 

After the contest ended on March 31, Auntie Anne’s Food Science and Technology Department narrowed all submitted recipes to the top 10. These 10 were highlighted on Auntie Anne’s In the Kitchen Facebook page where the Fan Favorite was determined by fan “likes.” The winner, Ronna Farley of Maryland, was awarded $250 for her Gooey Pretzel Bars. The bars feature Auntie Anne’s pretzel dough as a base, topped with caramel, chocolate and pecans.

 

The contest required entrants to use the dough mix and yeast provided in the kit, and the ten finalists were selected on the basis of taste, creativity and originality, ease of re-creation, and consumer appeal and appearance.

 

Versatility of Baking Kit

Auntie Anne’s At-Home Baking Kit Challenge showcased the versatility of the Baking Kit product capable of making appetizers, side dishes, breads, snacks, and desserts. Of the recipes submitted, the top categories included desserts, main dishes, and snacks. All three winning recipes will be featured on www.auntieannesrecipes.com. The site highlights 22 recipes designed by Auntie Anne’s culinary experts that make use of the company’s famous pretzel dough.

 

The suggested retail price for Auntie Anne’s At-Home Baking Kit is $5.99 to $7.99. In addition to participating Auntie Anne's stores, the kit is available at specialty retailers, a club store, and regional grocery chains located throughout the United States.
